Busy Weekend

CAMP

This weekend we worked a 4 hour camp for extra pay at our friend, Jessie's middle school. The camp was from 9am-12pm and my station was making ice-cream! My friend, Cara, and I had 4 classes that we had to teach and all I can say was that it was crazy! lol We were in the cafeteria with about 30-40 students in each class and there was water/ice all of the floor and sticky fingers all over and boys trying to make double the amount they were supposed to! In the end, the time went by extremely fast and the camp was extremely fun! Keith had it easy in a classroom where the students used tracers to make T-shirts on "Think Green" in order to encourage the students to recycle and take care of our environment.

Here's the recipe for making ice-cream. It's easy and delicious, so why wouldn't want to learn how to make it at home?

You need:

1 medium-large size container
1 small ziploc plastic bag
ice
salt
1 cup of milk
2 tablespoons of sugar
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla

*First, fill the container halfway or more with ice and put about 3 spoonfuls of salt in it. Put that container aside.

*Next, put 2 tablespoons of sugar into the ziploc bag, along with 1 cup of milk, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. Zip the bag securely.

*Then place the ziploc bag into the container and close the container. Shake the container (use your muscles!) for about 5-10 minutes until the liquid turns into an ice-cream texture.

*When the ice-cream is finished, take the bag out of the container, throw away the ice into the sink, and then add some M&Ms for a delicious summer treat!

It's that easy!!

Here are a few photos from the ice-cream activity. It's been very hot weather here (upper 80s-90s), so as you can imagine, the students had to eat their ice-cream very quickly before it melted. They didn't have any problem doing this!! We even had a few boys sneaking a second helping by making more as quickly as they could before heading out to the next class! Those sneaky little boys!

BABY SHOWER

We also went to a baby shower for our friend Cynthia (who comes to teach at my school on Mondays). She's having twins!! She just moved into a new house with her Korean husband. The house is so cute! They are painting the baby room right now with the theme of insects. Looks great so far! One foreigner/English teacher, Christine, on the island makes extremely delicious cakes. She has her own little business and website. Check out the 3 baby cakes she made for Cynthia!

DOUBLE-DATE

The next day, on Sunday, we went on a date with our good Korean friends, Won bong (who works at the bank and that's how we met him) and his fiance Jean. We will be going to their Korean wedding next winter. Can't wait! It will be an interesting experience. They have 1,000 guests that will be attending. I can't even imagine!

On our double-date, they took us to a popular chicken restaurant. Actually, the small village/town is called "chicken village" in Korean, since the whole street is filled with boiled chicken restaurants. You can see the chicken sign in the picture when we were driving off after leaving the area. The restaurant we went to was supposedly the most famous. It was a 3 course meal. We had Shabu Shabu, which is a bunch of vegetables in boiled in a pot and you slowly put the chicken meat into the pot and then eat it when it's cooked (only 1 minute later). There are always several side dishes with each meal. These 10 or so sidedishes consist of Kimchi, cabbage, seaweed, cucumbers and other vegetables. Next, they brought out a whole boiled chicken. And then finally, they brought out something similar to gruel or a porridge...rice mixed with some type of beans. The whole meal is supposed to be very healthy and the porridge is supposed to be good for your stomach. Afterward, we treated Won bong and Jean to an ice-cream treat in city hall. The name is pop-in-su, which means "shaved ice and water + bean". There are many different types of these dishes; however, we had the dish that consisted of strawberries, bananas, shaved ice, frozen yogurt and some small cookie crackers inside. Yum! It was refreshing since it was so hot out that day. It was probably one of the hottest days so far...in the 90s. However, Keith and I still ran in the morning outside....you can call us troopers! :)

After the date, the rest of the night was cleaning the apartment and getting things ready for our upcoming big trip!

I need to start packing...I think it will take me a while since we're going to be gone for about 4 weeks! Yikes! Can't wait!!!

Here's one more photo from the last date we had with Wong Bong and Jean! They're a great couple and so much fun to hang out with! They actually just bought us a Korean/English book to help us learn the language! Next year when we go out, we'll be helping Jean with her English, while they're helping us with our Korean. Hopefully our Korean will improve!
