Part I: Hawaii: Kauai (our favorite island!)

Our last island that we visited in Hawaii was Kauai, the place where Jurassic Park was filmed. It was by far our favorite island of Hawaii! It was so beautiful, it was the least touristy and commercialized, and there were tons of outdoor activities.

We stayed for two days and rented a blue 4 seat jeep! Again, we got nice discount from carrying the wedding dress around:) We found the local people to be very friends.

Things we did:

-We saw scenic views around the island (Hanalei Valley Lookout, Kalalau Lookout, Hanapepe Valley Lookout)
-we visited several beaches
-we went to Waimea Canyon (you can see the beautiful view below in our video) and ate lunch there while admiring the many colors of the canyon
-We did an 8 mile, 6 hr hike at the Na Pali Coast to the waterfall
-We saw Kilauea lighthouse
-we saw Spouting Horn (also in a video below; very cool)
-we went to the local art gallery town where they have several art shops opened in the evening
-we went swimming/hot-tub in the pool at our resort

The resort that we stayed at (on the east side of the island) was a pretty good price and looked very nice and HUGE! The night we got in, we were a little concerned though, because at 2am in the morning when we arrived, an elderly lady who looked and acted like she was almost 100 was working at the front desk. She could hardly speak and shook her hands when she was trying to take my card to pay for the room. Why would anyone have her work here? This brought a lil eery feeling to the big and empty resort. There was no one in site and we had assumed it was because it was so late, but it felt very strange. Luckily, the next day there were younger staff members and lots of guests at the resort! The pool was nice to swim in, plus they had a hot-tub that we used one night, and the resort was right off the beach!

The first day we took the jeep around the south end of the island. The beaches were absolutely beautiful and the Waimea Canyon was unbelievable! It looked like a painting come to life! We also had fun watching the Spouting Horn and stayed there for about an hour because we were so amused by it. That night we went to a art gallery town and checked out paintings, sculptures, antique stores, etc. for a few hours. We ate some delicious local Thai food, along with shaved ice and headed back to the hotel for a late night swim and relaxation time in the hot-tub.

On the second day, we took the jeep to the north side of the side. We got up extremely early, around 6 am, and drove for about an hour until we reached the national park for Na Pali coast. We brought snacks and water in a backpack and did a 6 hr/ 8 mile hike around the beautiful mountains, past a beach and up into the forest until we reached a big waterfall. I was so shocked at how dangerous the course was. There were a few kids on the course and I couldn't believe why because there were no railings and you were hiking so high on slippery dirt and rocks near the very edge of the cliff. The views during the hike were incredible! We also had to take off our shoes to walk through streams and climb over huge rocks in order to continue on the path. At some areas we couldn't even see a path so we kind of made our own. It definitely made the hike an adventure! We felt very accomplished after we finished! And the waterfall at the end was worth the hike. Very big, beautiful and refreshing!

After the hike, we went to a nearby beach where we relaxed, washed up in the outdoor showers, and watched some kite-boarders. Then afterward, we stopped off at a popular lighthouse, which overlooked an area where you could watch humpback whales, dolphins and seals. After a peek, we kept driving and watched the sunset as we headed back to the airport.

We couldn't believe our next stop: Samoa to get married!! :)
